Photo-journalism
I have been dabbling in different forms of photography for years -- film, digital, etcetera. But photojournalism presents the challenge of capturing a moment that reflects the subject as well, if not better, than a full written story. Below you will find work that I believe is impactful and presents the meaning of the circumstances beautifully.

Over 140 students gathered to march around the quad for eight minutes and 45 seconds, signifying the amount of time George Floyd was suffocated by a police officer until his death Sept. 3. The Black Student Coalition put together this march.
This picture was shot from the roof of the Windmoor building, where I believed that the overhead shot -- illustrating the quantity of student support -- would be impactful to the image.

A woman invokes passion into the crowd surroudning her as she cries out chants. A march was put on in downtown Kansas City to advocate for a women's right to an abortion in June of 2019.
I am proud of the pure emotion I was able to capture in this shot, seen through her physical attributes and the faces of the supporters.

Junior Ellie Hatley crouches with her dog, Banksy, at Leawood Dog Park, framed by a paw print cut out from the park bench Sept. 24. Hatley never works with Banksy in showing but she shows two other dogs from the same litter: Twizzler and Clyde. Banksy lives with Hatley full-time unlike her other show dogs.
AWARD: All-Missouri: Photography - Personality/Portrait
I felt this image perfectly captured the corresponding feature illustrating her hobby of showing dogs.

The small protest advocating for the Green New Deal is reflected in the window of Rep. Sharice David’s office while four police officers stood in front of her door. Dec 6. Nonetheless, the Sunrise Movement persisted.
The composition of this photo, focusing on the reflection of the protestors, portrays the protest in a different perspective -- the perspective of Rep. Davids.

A Rockhurst senior is carried by his friends as he crowd surfs on the dance floor April 13. Several people were seen crowd surfing throughout the dance.
This is one of two images I picked from this night because I felt I captured the raw fun that the seniors were having.

Sophomore Evelyn Parker stands socially distanced from her peers, actively listening to the speeches from faculty and students at the march Sept. 3. She holds a sign with “Black Lives Matter” written across it.
A second image from this gallery, I believe that the student being framed by the sillohutes of the neighboring protestors emphasizes the message of the march.

Senior Sadie Shugart uses her pom-pom to shield herself from the intermittent rain as the dance team heads on the football field Sept. 20. The rain continued off and on throughout the night but did not hinder the dancers’ performance.
The image allows the viewer to fully percieve themselves in the moment; the rain, the football team in the background, you can picture yourself at the game.

Popeye is a white and brown Pitbull Terrier mix, waiting patiently behind the bars of his kennel Dec. 9. He is available at KC Pet Project, a nonprofit animal shelter for dogs and cats.
I was challenged to invoke emotion in these photos through animals, which I believe I achieved.

Senior Olivia Rose stands on top of the Windmoor Center, holding a windmill prototype high in the air to measure how much energy is created by the device March 6. The Windmill Project students develop prototypes and test them on the roofs of each building of the campus.
This is another instance where I requested roof access for the shot to best portray the science project.

Junior Abby Farmer maneuvers up a wall on a self-belayer, attempting the red climbing grip path Feb. 15. RoKC is a rock climbing gym in North Kansas City that has activities outside of climbing , including foosball, yoga and basic exercise equipment.
For this photo I accompanied a student to the gym and climbed up the wall myself to get a birds-eye shot, which I am proud of thinking through and achieving the logistics.

A group of friends reaches out and holds hands while singing the lyric “touching hands” during “Sweet Caroline” April 13. The dance floor was overtaken by passionately yelling and dancing to the song.
The second photo from the prom gallery. You can almost hear the girls singing "Sweet Caroline", and the photo really captures the atmosphere of the night.
