Design

Journalism introduced me to the broad horizons of graphic and page design, and I fell head over heels in love. I was a co-design editor my junior year on staff, where I facilitated a cohesive print theme, managed and taught page designers on staff, and become very well versed in Adobe Suite.

As a publication, we received a ninth placement nationally National Student Press Association Best of Show for a Newsmagazine.

The spread in this shot is a feature story about political divides among families -- main graphic designed by me.

SPREADS

COVERS

Out of all of the covers I have designed, these two are my favorite. I focused on executing my vision for each through photo illustration. I believe that in 2020-2021 our publication has begun to take the execution of cover art more seriously than in years past, and it was been rewarding.

The cover on the left displays our cover story focused on youth involvement in the political sphere in and outside of voting. I thought that a line of students to a voting booth -- that I made myself out of foam -- would best represent this piece. I sent out a poll to the student body and collected students after school who showed interest in being on the cover and photographed them from standing on a ladder to fully show as many students as possible.

The cover on the right was on a feature piece that was sparked from Harry Styles being on the cover of Vogue Magazine in a dress. During this time, my school was completely virtual, so I convinced my sister to set aside a few hours to help me with this photo illustration. I wanted to show that one person could wear different stereotypically feminine and masculine clothing without distinction. I took all of the outfit photos in front of a blank backdrop, then photoshopped them all together.

Alternative coverage is a great opportunity to display information to support the story while adding an eye-grabbing visual element to the page or online story. While design editor, I hosted a series of presentations to implore students to get creative with their coverage, i.e. making more than just pie charts. I believe that a new standard has been developed for our staff regarding alt-cov, which is being upheld today.

Above, this was the alt-cov I developed for the "Financial Draft" cover story mentioned in the "Writing & Reporting" section.

Left, my most recent piece of alt-cov, for an online in-depth piece about the online trends throughout 2020.

Top left, an award-winning piece to further illustrate my "Food for the Heart" feature mentioned in the "Writing & Reporting" section.

Below: For our most recent issue, I designed alternative coverage to demonstrate the racial demographics of the student population to support the story about the importance of students of color at the institution. I reached out to the head of attendance, and collect information directly from the administration for this piece. I felt that it greatly supported the story and provided an insight into the student body that students' would not normally have access to.
